Home Remedies for Urinary Calculi

Urinary calculi or urinary stones are produced in the body when there is an obstruction in the urinary tract due to which there is a reduction in the fluid portion of the urine that is produced. As a result, the amounts of calcium and iron are increased in the kidney and they develop a solid shape known as the urinary calculi or urinary stones.

Urinary stones are of different sizes. They can be as small as a grain of sand, or they could be as large as a walnut. The size of the stone depends on the amount of deposition that is responsible for their formation.

Naturally, the bigger the stone, the more difficult it is to remove them. Also, in men treatment of urinary stones is more difficult than in women, as in men, the urinary aperture is narrower than in women.

The following symptoms indicate the presence of stones in the excretory system:-

(i) Pain in the lower abdominal region, especially when the person is moving. If the pain may also originate from the lower back region and pass through to the thighs, then it means the stone is present in the ureters (ducts carrying the urine from the kidneys to the bladder); but if the pain begins from the abdomen and is intermittent, then the stone is present in the kidney.

(ii) The pains due to the stones are continual. They become very acute for a few minutes, and then they stop completely.

(iii) Vomiting occurs. There could be slight fever.

(iv) With urination, some blood could be given out, and the urination is accompanied by a burning sensation in the urethra.

A person may not feel the presence of the stone as long as it is in the kidney. Only when the stone tries to come down from the kidneys to the urinary bladder is the pain felt. The pain is sometimes very intense and the person may become totally convulsed in pain. However, by treatment, the stones are slowly disintegrated into small pieces and tried to be eliminated through the urine.

How to get rid of Urinary Calculi

With urinary calculi, prevention is certainly much better than the cure itself. The following guidelines help in preventing the conditions of urinary calculi to occur.

(i) Drink lots of water. Water helps to dissolve the minerals that have not been assimilated in the diet and to flush them out through the urinary system. Without water, the minerals would crystallize in the kidneys of the urinary bladder and would form stones.

(ii) The diet should be kept low in proteins, nitrogen and sodium.

(iii) The following foods increase the risk of kidney stones and must not be taken in excess – spinach, chocolate, peanuts, cocoa, grapefruit, tomato, rhubarb, apple juice, etc. Cola drinks must also be avoided.

(iv) Reduce the intake of calcium and potassium minerals in the diet.
